Early March Fishing and New Inventory Update

Our weather has left a lot to desire on the water. Wind and rain has muddied up the Neuse up river.
Rock have been caught but not by all and in great numbers. Large soft plastic jigs have proved best. Hopefully with a little warmer weather we can get a good to water bite going.
Shad are being caught up river as well with good numbers being reported. Along with this, some are soaking fresh shad and catching nice cats and a few rock.
Speckled trout are being caught up river as well as in my local area creeks. This doesn’t mean you can go right out and limit out though. You have to be able to move around and fish an area slow. There have been fish caught in good numbers and size one day and no bites the next. Have to keep fishing and moving but will produce a good days fishing.  Soft plastics jigged along bottom work best or float a mud minnow if live bait is your choice. There has also been days when fly fisherman have had a great day – weather being the factor. Todd and Michael found some fish to pick at with the fly.
There actually have been a few reports of good puppy drum catches; hang on for a good spring/summer.
Bottom line - the rock are heading up river to their spawning grounds and can be caught effectively using soft plastics like my DOA CALs. Fish jigs working the skinny to deep ledges staying in contact with bait as it drops. Trout and pups will begin to fire up as the water slowly warms (soon I hope).
