Minnesott Beach Fishing Reports

Early December Update

The trout and rock bite has been great. The new Storm Arashi Cover Pop has been doing the deal for both. After the topwater bite the DOA CAL baits twitched along the bottom seems to work best in this cooler waters.

Now on to my adventures:

I did my first trip to South Texas in search of Big Trout and 1st Annual DOA Lures Writer Event. What an experience to say the least.

First day fished with our DOA Texas Rep Capt Brian Barrera. Local Tex/Mex guy that knows the territory. We fished out of Shallow Sport skiffs that we actually ran in 3 inches of water in! Yep – water very skinny there and loads of grass. We caught numerous upper slot drum and really nice trout fishing pot holes in about 12-18 inches of water. The fish had nowhere to run but out! I got one trout at 30” – long and skinny but a blast. My hat goes off to EZ Tackle for the Fenwick Inshore rods and New Daiwa Ballistics reels which are extremely light and handed these fish perfect – my go to set up now.

Days 2-4 were windy and rainy with SNOW on Friday! Yes – 7 miles from Mexico and snow. We did get to fish Saturday and water temps were cold – dead and stunned turtles, pelicans and trout seen. They can’t stand that shock there. Only way I did was seal out wind with my Frogg Toggs Pilot II outfit – glad I took it.

All said, had a good time there and a great fishery they have – very unique style also. If ever out that way contact Captain Brian Barrera at 956 755-9413. And not just fishing – excellent hunting for everything from ducks to exotic animals in the wild. Had one guy shot a nilgai around 800 lbs. while we were there.

Back home ready for more local adventures – call to book rock and trout trips this winter and see y’all at the shows!

I am now booking 3 day trip out of Biloxi Miss on a 100 ft mother ship fishing the Chandeliar Islands in Louisiana - a blast with good fishing, food and fellowship - only $950 a person! Call if interested.

Want to wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and Thanks for helping make this year a successful one.
