Windy but Fish

This weather has been a Bear! – SW blow and blow ‘til no water left.
A few have made it out this week with mixed results. There has been some really nice trout caught in creek mouths and in river structure. They have been caught on live mud minnows, DOA Deadly Combos and Storm Chug Bugs.

There have been some nice pods of puppy drum caught in the river and creeks with a few slot fish mixed in. My sources are using mostly live mud minnows.
Weather is calling for a wind shift that will hopefully push some needed water back in but not BLOW! With this will bring a great bite in our river if we can get out and do it.
The shop is stocked up with all the bait and tackle needed for this fishery – mud minnows in the tank too. Need a new rod – I got it – from mid-$20 on up to $200 range. Lots of used stuff too.
Your larger boat needs can also be had with Power Poles and Trolling Motors sold and install here – Capt Richard Andrews just joined the Power Pole Guide Staff as we installed a new 8’ Pro II on his 22 Path Finder. He will be working out of Manteo NC area this summer – if heading to the beach – give him a call.

If you would like to come to the area and stay right on Dawson Creek with your own dock and fish can be caught there – give me a call – it is available for the weekend.
Hope all have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day. Let’s go fishing – I am just a phone call away.

Early May Update

I got to say – the fishing is on! Trout, Drum, Flounder and Rock are all being found in creeks and river shore. The problem recent has been the wind and too high of water. For those getting out, it has been worth the venture. Shoreline catches are improving drastically as fish are staged to hit the river shore and sound.
One of the local guys that, wishes to be anonymous, has been on several pods of slot and yearling drum. He has been catching on top water and live bait as well. He has report one at measuring 29”. Good sign for coming summer!!!
My Man Michael Carawan had his play weekend and put it to good use. Day one was numerous and I mean numerous trout, drum and flounder. Top water drum up to 29”, DOA Shad tail slot drum, trout and flounder. It was makings for a great trip with Kenny Campen.
Day 2 he had Brad Moore out for an afternoon of play. Brad started out throwing his Gulp and Michael the good ole DOA CAL Shad tail. After several DOA fish boated he decided to go to the best bait – DOA and began with a small drum. They caught several fish of several species having a great afternoon.

I had 2 trips this week – the 1st being with a local guide and friend that I took on a scouting trip – me and Gary Dubiel hit some on my prospective spots and man was it a struggle. I did manage to put him on a trout and drum to end up having a happy client!!!!

The 2nd was a trip which I moved from one location to another with Lee Smith and his buddy Ruddy Christensen. It was Lees’ birthday. We had a far rock top water bite early hitting a few short fish and Ruddy finally stuck what would have been a slot fish at about 20”. He ended up snagging a bigger catch we I set the back hook of the Chug Bug in my finger!!! Cut it off and kept going. We then went after trout and drum throwing DOA Deadly Combos and found a few in 2 locations – most short but live welled 2. Then at the last main stop looking a drum or rock – Ruddy tagged into an 18 ½ slot drum – his first ever. It gave him a run for his money hanging up on some structure but he managed it well and got it out and to the net.

Fishing will continue to improve as weather allows. The top water action for trout and rock up river has been great at times early am and later pm. There has also been loads of catching on DOA Deadly combo in areas of structure and grass. Creeks have loads of grass making treble hook suspending baits tough in areas. Go weed less with VMC wide gap weighted hooks and you can get it done.
Time to get on the water and keep in mind that the Neuse region keeper rock season is closed but the catch and release of 18-30” light tackle is to die for!!!
	Call to book today!

Beautiful conditions other than COLD – 38 degree late April!!!!
Out with John Comey and his CRAZY buds after top water rock. First stop was lifeless – no bait or takers. Quick to next stop and found a pocket of far rock, missing several blow ups and landing several as well with one nice 19-20 cooler fish on Rapala Skitter Walk – Storm Chug Bug did its trick too. They shut off quick so move to #3 – wind got uo and no takers. Change stately and into a near creek and found some trout and a rock. Chris had one nice trout on Rapala Twitchin Rap and also a small rock. I don’t want to leave out Stuart; he somehow didn’t get into the pictures but damn I could have done a video on him. He could be a comedian as a second job. Great fun am trip with some fun young men.

I have had constant reports of nice catches of trout and drum of late, thanks to water pushing in and warmer water. It’s only going to get better. Hottest bait has been again the DOA shrimp and CALS. The Deadly Combo has really been doing the job. Tommy and Tyler were out Sunday showing this off. And Lauren Dean got her first trout!! Way to go.

My son in law Michael had an exception day just scouting around – ran up on a scholl of yearling drum in the shallows!!!!! Had 1 29 inch on top water and then found the flounder and slots later on DOA CAL shad tail in the Figi Chicken color.

And to top it off, Stuart Creighton of Raleigh showed off how the new DOA Airhead works on bass – yes freshwater.

My shop is in full swing helping with Power Pole, Trolling motor and tackle needs – Minnows in the tank.
Charters have been steady with openings for your adventure. Looking like another Good Year – Lets Go!

Warmer Weather Warms my Waters measn Fish

Rock have started their run up the Neuse River towards spawning grounds in Goldboro. With warmer water you can find some top water action early in am on stumpy shoreline throwing Rapala Skitter Walks and Storm Chug Bugs. After this adventure set up working deep ledges working soft plastics such as DOA and especially the new Airhead bait. It can be a sensitive bite so light tackle and braid are essential. These fish will be spawned out soon and heading back down river to produce a hungry sexed out bite on top water and jigging. The legal season ends 30 April but action will continue for the catch and release fun.

Trout action is setting up on fire with a large mixed size class. There has been reports of 6" - 26" fish caught all over the Neuse River creeks. Again, most of what I have been catching on is soft plastics (DOA) and now rigging on VMC Wide Gap Heavy dutty 3/0 weighted hooks. These have a hook up rate far better than I have ever seen. The Airhead is producing well too worked in a slowwww.. twitch bait style along the bottom. Kip and Elaine also found some trout and pups on this trip w/me. As water aproaches 60+ degree pont we will see even better action as these fish warm too.

Puppy drum action has been increasing well of late. This is good to see in our area as a sign of a much better summer slot action.
Shop is open now with all your local needs - great weather this weekend - come see us.

Come get on board and enjoy this great action. Book a trip today.

Did a split trip today with one of my regular clients hitting rock on top water and jigging ledges in the am and targeting trout and drum in pm.
I had Kip Anderson on the am trip up river on the Neuse at first light (cold too). We did find a fair top water bite for about an hour with Kip landing a 22”er on a Storm Chug Bug. Then we went up river more and dodged the wing landing another nice 20” fat rock on a DOA Jerk Shad.

After Lunch and a nap we were back at it for other species with Kip and his wife Elaine. We found trout in several stops ranging for 8 up to about 20 inches fishing DOA CAL Jerk Shad on VMC Wide Gap weighted hooks and Elaine’s favorite – DOA 3” shrimp she has name Quennie. Kip also caught a pup making it a 3 species day for him.

I have openings this month for 16,17,18,19,22,23,24, and 29. I am also booking cobia and Big Drum trips for the July – Sept time frame. LETS GO!

Neuse Scouting Trip

I took an afternoon scout trip looking for more speckled trout Friday. Pretty day with light NW winds out of Minnesott. First stop – wind was hard North. Believe that! Fished hard no takers. Next stop wind still North – a few taps and about 6 fish to the boat. Next stop – no fish and I ran into a buddy looking for 2 more trout to make a limit for his wife and little girl. Matt jumped in the boat and we went and snagged a couple more sending him home with supper. DOA CAL Shad Tail!

I them move to another stop and wind was around to the South! Yep –South. Hard to fish that spot.
Again to my last stop – fished a long shoreline with no taps and an EAST wind! At the end of the course I had a tap. Pole down. I caught numerous 17-20” trout on DOA CAL Shad Tail rigged on a VMC Wide Gap weighted hook in about 20 minutes and it STOPPED. I moved all around and could not find them again.

Fish are getting sparked but you have to be mobile and patient, fishing baits SLOW letting them get to it as they move SLOW.
Rock are heading up to spawn – some good jig fishing up river too.
I have openings 1, 3 & 4 of April for any adventurous anglers wanting to target these fish. Let’s Go.

DOA CAL Shad Tail/VMC Wide Gap Weighted Hook, 6#Fins Braid/Diawa Exceler Reel on TFO Signature Light Rod with my Minn Kota moving me around makes for a good day

What a great weekend of fishing, fellowship and instruction!
I had the pleasure of getting Mark Nichols of DOA Lures here to fish one afternoon and be our special guest Sunday at Coastal Catchin’ Seminars Soft Plastics event .
We started out on Garys boat catching numerous trout ranging from 6 inches to 2 pounds fishing DOA Cal baits on DOA jig heads and VMC weighted hooks. Mark started by throwing the new Airhead riged with a 5/0 worm hook and a DOA 1/8 pinch weight. After a while he changed colors and went with the dreaded Electric Chicken! Bang – they stared eating it up. I decided to rig up Airhead too and ended up hooking up on the Pearl White rigged with a VMC 1/8 weighted 3/0 hook set up. Now we had cauoght of several baits and it was time to go with the good ole SHRIMP. I picked uo one of Marks rods already rigged with a Glow/Gold 3” shrimp and BANG – fish on! After a couple I switched to the Watermelon/ Clear Halo – Bang! Another hook-up. Not sure how many fish we caught but Damn it was fun. Anytime on the boat tugging on trout especially in good company is GREAT.

James Holloway took his stepdaughter Meg Anderson out and put her on some nice rock – 5 to be exact. They were fishing stumpy shoreline using hard plastic twitch baits. The smile on her face shows Meg was happy and I am sure step dad was too – TAKE A KID fishin’

Our seminar was a hit (I think). We discussed soft plastics rigging and fishing technics for all of our local species – including bass. We well brand specific wit Mark Nichols being our Star Guest. And man for those who have never met him – you missed it. He is a fanatical fisherman full of knowledge willing to share and funny to say the least.

For those who missed it – stay tuned. We are working on a instruction video of the event and if all works out I will have them available online – also checking on making closed captioned to per request from one of the participants.

Fishing should continue to improve – get out and get’um. And, try to think conservative practice catch and release. ( keeping a few to eat is good too and 1 ½ - 2 lb are best)

I am on the water now – lets go. Trips available for trout, drum and maybe cobia coming up. LETS GO!
