Late Oct Spark
I had a good week chasing trout and rock. Weather changes are improving our recreation fall fishing season.
I found trout Monday fishing local creeks using Mirrolure MR 17s. Found some small and some slot fish at some of my local spots. I had to move around to locate them but was satisfied to catch what I did, tagging some too.
Tuesday was great day fishing with my buddy Capt Gary Dubiel. We were doing a shoot for Carolina Outdoor Journal fishing rock in New Bern area. We had an excellent top water bite in am fishing stump fields and finished show jig fishing shorelines and the reef. Great show up coming, not because I am in it but the top water action was awesome. Stay tuned until next September.
To top this off, one of my good buddies got bored the other day and took his favorite rod and bait out on his pier on the Neuse to try his luck on trout. He ended up with an unexpected catch. After a 30 minute fight almost completely spooled he came in with a 44” drum! Believe it. His wife netted fish and took pictures, Who knows if there are more around after such an awesome season we had.
My charter bookings are dictating the season. Call me to book your trip today.

Pre Tournament Report

Cooler weather soon to get here. Fishing looks to be a lot better than we expected.
There are a lot of trout around which will be moving in as weather cools. I have reports of a lot of small fish with good mixes of slot fish. You have to move around to locate but when you find them the fun begins. Baits of choice have been 17 and 18MRs, Gulp and my favorite DOA. Not just the shrimp but their CAL baits and Heads are excellent. The picture trout was one of many caught dock fishing; what can be done from a boat????
Rock fishing is great already. Excellent topwater bites in am and pm working structure and docks. Jigging and casting the reef and bridges is also producing well. My baits of choice are Storm Chug Bugs and Rapala Skitter walks for topwater and Gulp with DOA CALS and MY Rockin’ Wobble combo being my favorite.
Had a great trip Tuesday targeting the rock with the Mack brothers. May was there some trash talking going on. Little brother Tony said he was the fisherman and old brother Mike was just a dreamer. Well, 1st out the gate throwing chub bugs in the stump, on 1st cast , Michaels hooked up. A slot rock, his first. Not many cast later, another 22 inch fish. Tony was catching ...... Left there and hit the reef and bridges. Not sure how many we caught, releasing most, and keeping them a nice limit.
Conditions should only improve into the fall so get out a go.
If you need a good guide, I can recommend 1 or 2, myself being #1 in my book! Call me the target these fish throughout the winter too.

BIG Drum on the Neuse

Another great BIG Drum week – now time for a Blow!!!!
Had Randy Durham and one of his site (www.NCangler.com) moderators out Wed afternoon. I wetted them down to start with a stiff NE wind before settling down to some action. They both managed to get well deserved citation catches. It was Jeffs first catch. Good fishing with good people.
Thursday Am was out with Mike Marsh and my buddy Capt Gary Dubiel. We got him some good writing stuff and lots of pictures with 3 fish in first hour of drumming. We then went for light tackle and managed a yearling drum and trout fishing bait slicks in shallows.
Thursday afternoon was a trip with Noble Brother Joey Freeman, his grandson Christian Register and his buddy Jeff. Started a little slow with 3 unpinned fish then it fired up – had 2 flurries landing 5 (4 citations) with I double. This was Christian’s first Big drum and he is pumped. Had to get him back on dry ground to get re-focused for first day of school.
Oh, by the way, my daughter Crystal got her 1st Big Boy thanks to her Boo Michael.
What other fish can you target and get these numbers of citations? Let’s GO! Don’t let storm worry you – drum will still be hereafter blow.
If you are from out of town and need somewhere to stay; I can help arrange.
Bookings are coming in so call soon to tackle one of these citation fish.
Be Safe on the water.

Neuse River OLD Drum Report

order: 0;” alt=“image” />

It was a great week on the Neuse. Old Drum are hungry. Two trips for first time Old Drum catches.
First trip with was with Chuck and Linda Rothbart. Weather was rough with stiff NE wind. Started out slow but ended trip with 5 boated and 1 spitting hook at boat. We say this was the HOG!! Linda was moaning (picture tells story) a bit on first fish but regained composure and said sheepishly; I want another! 2 citation fish at 41” and 44”.
Second trip was with the Levtzow family. Slick hot conditions, more manageable that first. Hope (my first mate) got here first old drum only short time into trip with a nice 43” citation fish. Second fish went to her brother, Brandon, landing a feisty 38” fish. I attempted to fill dads (John) bucket list to no avail. He said his goal was accomplished with is 2 kids catches.
Fish are here – and I am ready to take you on a fun trip! It’s getting busy so call early.
Call to book trip that I guarantee FUN and all the effort I can put out to put you on a trophy.

Brackdoor trip

Quick report of a great morning with my fishin’ partner Capt Gary Dubiel. Put him on my boat in my backyard and man did we have a great trip. 6 drum with 5 in slot and largest 26”, 7 trout tagging 4, one release and eating 2 and several small flounder. Bait thick here and good reason for the fish. All caught on artificial, jigging bottom.
Nice to get out and enjoy a day not thinking of work but now wondering who may want to come target this with me. 4-6 hours is all needed plus heat is bad around 12.
Call me to book a trip – possible combine this with rock in New Bern.‘
Be Safe on the water.

Late July Update

Well, been a while since I reported. Been slow at best with heat, wind and no water.
Took another trip out of the area fishing Little River SC. Michael and myself had some flounder, drum and black drum. A little better than our fisheries by traveling just a few miles south.
I set up a wedding party fishing trip for the Bettis family out of River Dunes last week. We scattered from sound to Dawson Creek and had a few slot fish; 2 trout and 3 drum. I think they had a good time just getting out in the water.
Flounder is still the big news with a lot of them being caught around piers, rocks and structure in the river. Baits of choice has been Gulp, Deep Creek and mud minnows. I have had decent reports of keeper fish too.
Old Drum should be showing up really soon. I have had reports of some in sound. My morning effort today showed good sign but no drum. It’s time to get your gear ready. I can re-spool your reels or set you up with a new Penn Slammer Combo. I keep plenty of Lupton rigs and chum in stock and will be taking fresh mullet as of 12 August.
For you hunters, I can fix you up with ammo, cross bow and accessories. Call me with you request for pricing.
Don’t forget all the other gear I carry and install at discounted prices.
Booking Old Drum trips now – call to reserve you day. Conditions are right and the way this summer is going anything’s possible. Call me to get booked.
Be Safe on the water.

4th of July

If not for the punishment of our fisheries, the weather is continually hammering us. Overall things are rather slow with some reports of nice flounder being the prize catch. An occasional trout or drum can be nabbed on your favorite artificial with live and cut bait proving the best. Top water rock can still be caught in New Bern, great action for a slow summer fishery.
My daughter and her BO went out and caught some live shrimp soaking them around Neuse docks getting trout, drum and black drum. This was during the middle of the day too.
Henry and Marie of Deep Creek Lures stopped by to take some of my money showing of their shoreline catch on their baits. Nice pair of slots and this shows their product works too.
I and Gary Dubiel went south last week landing in Jenson Beach Florida fishing with various local guides during the DOA Lures writer’s event. It was a great time of food, beverage and fellowship with the best of fishing with DOA products. We caught trout, snook, tarpon, snapper, black drum, lady fish, spanish mackerel, catfish and more. Loads of species and quantities. Bait everywhere! Some huge fish too. I fished Monday with Jim Harter targeting snook and tarpon. Tough morning with one snapper and one huge snook. Measured over 41” long and weighing 32 lb. A rare catch that didn’t take my bait but was great to watch. Tuesday I fished with Capt Jeremy Neff and his bride. How luck of a draw! We stayed in one canal all morning looking at huge snook laying under the docks wanting nothing but did get some good fish busting in the greenies. I caught on a white DOA ¼ jig head with a watermelon CAL jerk bait. They would all but rip it out of your hand. Kind of like a rock but with a much more aggressive peel off at first hook up. I did land a lady fish and catfish too. We did wade fish around a bridge both days catching smaller trout. One on my first cast in Florida waters on a white DOA shrimp.
Heading north we stopped in Beaufort SC to fish with Capt Owen Plair. They have an over 6 foot tide change there, much different than here. We fished grass shorelines and oyster beds throwing DOA shrimp and Cal jerk baits catching slot drum running along the shore. We did cast to a couple of tarpon with no hook up too. Capt Owen poled his rear of in the wind to help put us on fish.
Bottom line, it makes me sick to see the fisheries other neighboring states have along with the people using the local shops and filling all the public ramps they have. What a way to liven the economy and generate tax revenue. Maybe one day we will have this, but until, XXXXXXX.
I hope to have my new line of Denali microfiber polyester shirts soon. They are so cool and have a 50 UV protection rating. Not hot at all. I got in a Columbia shirt similar, thanks to them for putting me in their guide program. If you would like one, let me know size and I will place in order. If I get enough orders I can sell for $32.95 or if not $39.95. Well worth the money.
Don’t forget all the other gear I carry and install at discounted prices.
Look for possible early drum trips. Conditions are right and the way this summer is going anything’s possible. Call me to get booked.
Be Safe on the water.

Hot June Update

The weather is still tough on the Neuse. I ran a couple of trips with some success, even without the weather man’s help.
Friday’s trip with Ralph and his wife Jackie was shortened due to severe storms popping up on us. Prior to that we had several small trout and flounder a lot with 1 nice slot drum. I have to say, Ralph is the man, he brought his own bait casters in a stiff wind and managed to catch several trout on jigs with minimal birds nesting. But, Jackie put it on him with the slot drum!!!!
Saturday’s trip was an educational trip teaching Roberts’ children, Emily and Evan, how to cast and fish. It was Emily’s Birthday trip at 8 years old. She managed to be the star catching a pin fish, flounder, and a trout. Couldn’t get picture of her and trout, scared her terribly. Evan did finally catch a croaker. His coach, Dad, was not as lucky as the Mom and daughter!!!! Went in search of drum to complete Emily’s slam but never hooked up. I did go back to my spot after dropping them off and landing 2, 20+ inch drum. I knew they were there. The both learned the basics of casting spinning rods and will get nothing but better with more practice.
Flounder have continued to be the main stay along the river. A lot of small fish with mixed keepers (15”). Baits of choice are mud and mullet minnows with some using gulp and deep creek baits on jigs.
I am posting my rough draft with final proof to follow soon of my new line of Denali microfiber polyester shirts like the DOA you see me wearing. They are so cool and have a 50 UV protection rating. Not hot at all. I will have my Minnesott Marvin and KneEDeeP Custom Charters on it along with a few phrases. If you would like one, let me know size and I will place in order. If I get enough orders I can sell for $32.95 or if not $39.95. Well worth the money.
Don’t forget all the other gear I carry and install at discounted prices.
My charters are picking up targeting these fish and I Guarantee FUN. Look for possible early drum trips too. Conditions are right and the way this summer is going anything’s possible. Call me to get booked.
Be Safe on the water.

Mid June Reort

Heat, wind and low water are the story on the Neuse. It has made for some tough fishing this week.
I did get the opportunity to carry my Trout Tagging Boss, Tim Ellis, old time friend Wes and Tim’s brother in law, on a pre-nuptial fishing expedition Friday. It was very slow to start with Tim’s Brother in law getting the first trout. It was larger enough to tag in honor of Tim. Moved to another location and found a school of small trout hanging on a rough point. DOA Deadly Combo was the bait over live minnows. We caught around 10 tagging 2 with Wes FINALLY getting his first! He’s a little slow> We then went back to our starting targeting slot drum which evaded us earlier. First minnow to hit the water bent the rod over. Wes was redeeming his lack of capability on trout. We finally got the pull we looked for. Short live with only one fish where others should have been schooled up. I sent them off happy – ready for the weekend marriage endeavor. Hope all went well Tim, and Wes; come back if you want some more lessons!!!!
Michael and Brad made an around the world trip Saturday from Dawson around Swan – through Turnagain and back catching a mixed bag with 2 nice slot drum. It was a lot of travels for a few fish but a good fun day for the 2.
It appears the rock will hand in New Bern for those early birds. Early morning and late evening the best for top water bite.
Speaking of New Bern, check out Jeremy’s large drum caught last week up that way of a gulp. I get the feeling that as we are seeing with inshore and offshore fish, the Old Drum might get in early this year. There have been some rumored reports of tarpon sighting too.
The drum picture in my store page is what I am having put on my new line of Denali microfiber polyester shirts like to DOA you see me wearing. The are so cool and have a 50 UV protection rating. Not hot at all. I will have my marvin and KneEDeeP custom Charters on it alonf with a few phrases. If you would like one, let me know size and I will place in order. If i get enough orders i can sell for $32.95 or if not $39.95. Well worth the money.
I have plenty of charter openings to target these fish and Guarantee FUN. Call me to get booked.
Be Safe on the water.
