Drum Update

Ole Drum have been caught in good numbers and huge sizes this past weekend for those in rocking and rolling. Not all spots producing best – have to move around as fish do. Bait situation has been tough with limited mullet available – need to plan ahead. Large menhaden have been far scattered too. SSGT Bennett has been catch bunches of slot drum and now has hit on the Ole Drum. Lisa Hodges got her first drum along with sons 2 slots. Just gotta go get,em. Now that Chris has finally graduated from college and is having to work for a living – he still gets to fish. He had a captain in a bigger boat haul him around last weekend landing numerous ole drum and providing us some better looking pictures than myself!!! Go girls.
Headed out Monday to try my luck again w/ my man Michael – fished 3 spots and went 4 for 6 w/ one huge ray before 7pm – moved to one other place I wanted to try at dark and ended up with one huge ray and a 47 incher. Good day in anyone’s eyes. Michael is heading back out today – a lot younger than me, I’m tired.
One of my customers put his kids on some nice drum – great to see kids enjoying the best sport around!!! Good job Hunter.
Weather looks ok for this coming weekend if we can get Earl out of the way so call if I can help you.
Please call me to order your mullets. Most use 20/25# a trip. I also have a good supply of chum, Penn Slammer Combos and lupton rigs.
Big drum trips available and can also be scheduled. I prefer late afternoon returning around dark. Call for details.
There is another event I am promoting that benefits Southeast Pamlico Volunteer Fire Dept. It is Teach’s Cove Kayak Fishing Tournament. Yes – no power boats allowed. Huston Wallace is the creator and chairman of this event and has been putting a lot of effort in this benefit as part of a high school project. I am glad to have been asked to be the weigh master for his event. I have applications in my shop or you can get from his website http://web.me.com/ebwjrw/tctournament.com/Welcome.html If you don’t fish from kayak or canoe then tell someone who does or I know he will gladly accept donations as well. Lets all support this young mans effort.
Want to also make a hit for our Pamlico County Shrine Club Trout Tournament coming up Oct. 23rd. It will be another fun event with loads of prizes and cash. There is a conflict that has just come to my knowledge. This being our 3rd year – now CCA is scheduling on our same day an Inside/Out Event. Hope all that have supported us will continue and we are growing – as anyone who has fished it on the fun and prizes. After this year 50% of proceeds from your entries and sponsors donation will go to the Shriners Childrens Hospitals; which I am proud to say, my grandson is now a shriner child and patient there.
I am up and running now selling Ncwildlife hunting/fishing license and boater registrations. Let me know if I can help you with yours. I am also going to take orders for cases of shot gun shells and rifle bullets. Not going to stock in shop but can have if available in 2 days at as always – my discount pricing.

Aug 22 Report

I spent a week away with wife, daughter and grandson leaving operation in good hands with JB. Had some good reports of flounder, slot and old drum. Did a short pier fishing trip with only really small sea mullets. Hope the make their adulthood running from sharks.
Michael is working on the first NC Fisheries Slam citation. He has a 24” release trout and added a 41” drum but just a real nice catch of flounder. Citation flounder is his mission now and I feel assured he will get it.
One of my customers put his kids on some nice drum – great to see kids enjoying the best sport around!!! Good job Hunter.
My man JB tried his had at showing people how to fish and stuck their first Old Drum.
Please call me to order your mullets. Most use 20/25# a trip. I also have a good supply of chum, Penn Slammer Combos and lupton rigs.
Big drum trips available and can also be scheduled. I prefer late afternoon returning around dark. Call for details.

Late July Update

WOW – calm winds and a push of new water in the Neuse! Also good signs of bait too. Lets look for a good week/weekend.
Tarpon tournament this weekend may be tough – rough weather has hindered scouting and fresh spot and croaker are at a premium, not much around to be bought.
I have not heard much on old drum this week – rough weather with low water level. If weather hold we may see some action this weekend and I am planning on having the freshest mullet available though the season. If I don’t have any, I have a good friend to send you to to fill your cooler. Please call me to order yours. Most use 20/25# a trip. I also have a good supply of chum and lupton rigs.
My Wendell family did well this past weekend on some large black drum. Ryan claims to have caught both larger drum weighing in at 6-7# each.
Staff Sergeant Mike finally got what he has been chasing – a nice 26’ slot drum to go along with some others. He is now ready for the Old Man and I have promised to get him there too.
Trout, flounder and puppy drum have been caught in various areas in the Neuse. Most are being caught on live bait but your artificial lures work too.
I will be taking eating shrimp and mullet orders through the rest of the summer. I guarantee freshness on anything I carry.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
Big drum trips available and can also be scheduled. I prefer late afternoon returning around dark. Call for details.
Please try to support the Jimmy Arthur Memorial Fishing Tournament set for August 7 with all proceeds going to his 3 girls. If you don’t fish, come get some good BBQ plates. Tickets are available for plates Saturday the 7th with all these proceeds going to girls as well. Let me know if you need tickets, applications or just want to donate to the girls.
I am still waiting on Motor Guide trolling motor authorized service center approval. Trying to give Motor Guide owners another option for repairs. I can also assist you with your Motor Guide, Minn Kota and Power Pole purchases at my discount pricing as well as installs.

Late July Report

This has been the hottest – slowest stretch this summer. Winding too!
Tarpon sighting and hook-up has been limited with weather. Need some lazy days to get it going.
My guy Michael took his the grudge match with the only fish 2 nice fish; 5.5 citation trout and an upper slot drum to beat out 3 other guys.
Ms Pace was in yet again with a hopeful citation getting only a picture post – keep going girl.
And let’s not leave out Uplander ED, a bass fisherman turn local fisherman. He and wife have been staying on Dawson Creek for an extended vacation. He asked me about local fishing and “aint skeered” to cross river in his bass boat to Turnagan Bay area. He has caught drum flounder and trout showing off these 2, a 24 and 28”er. He loved my mud minnows but got it handed to him Wednesday coming back across river. He’s heading home soon but is planning a return trip to fish Jimmy’s Tournament.
Myself, Gary Dubiel and Tim Ellis made a trip to tag some trout but scratched out on trout. We should have been after pups and flounder. Covered a enormous area with a lot of casting but no trout.
The trout and upper slot drum that we were on a couple of weeks ago have moved – maybe to deeper/cooler water.
Mud Minnows have been my bait of choice of late over rubber!
Latest news is Ole Drum – there have been several confirmed catches this week – here we go. Will be keeping a good supply of chum and lupton rigs and can fill your fresh mullet orders if called in advance. Also let me re-line your reels with fresh line to handle this monsters. Mono or braid available.
Shrimp are getting larger (20 count) and I am taking orders now for eating shrimp. Prices are not currently escalating as expected.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
Big drum trips available and can also be scheduled. I prefer late afternoon returning around dark. Call for details.
We are on for the Jimmy Arthur Memorial Fishing Tournament set for August 7 with all proceeds going to his 3 girls. It is going to be flounder, trout and drum with trophies for 3 largest in each category. There is also a jr angler category with trophies for largest of each category. Rule #1 is “It will be a fun annual event to help the 3 girls he so dearly loved”. Contact me for info and please come help and have fun. You can fish from boat, land or pier. Cost is $50 and &25 for jr anglers under 16. All event will be out of Pamlico County Moose Lodge. Donations also accepted. Let me know if you need any additional info – flyers will be out next week in all local merchants in 4 county area. We also are selling BBQ plate tickets for Saturday the 7th with all these proceeds going to girls as well. Let me know if you need tickets, applications or just want to donate to the girls.
I am also going to be carrying a new boat hull cleaner that you will want to have – suppose to be the best – more to follow.
I should be set up as a NC Wildlife License Agent in August taking care of all your hunting/fishing license needs as well as boat registration and renewals. School scheduled for Aug 3rd if I can pass! Been a longtime since I was in school.
For anyone looking for a place to rent for a vacation in Pamlico County – I have the opportunity to offer a friends house that has 2 bdrm/1bath on Dawson Creek with private pier. Call me and I will hook you up with the owners.

4th July Update

jimmy_app.doc
Hope all had a safe and fun 4th – appeared that all did around Minnesott Beach. Saw a lot of families sharing weekend together.
It’s still the same story – the best fishing near the sound. Trout drum, flounder & spanish. Tarpon have been spotted with several being stuck this weekend.
Michael took his lady Julie on a trip this weekend and put her on 2 nice fish; 4.25 trout and 25 inch drum plus more fish at less size.
Michael also took me out on his new boat and we had a good day. Several drum in slot range with 2 at top of slot weighing in at just under 14# for both. Would have done well if in a tournament! Also had a couple 19-20” trout and 1 nice flounder, tagging one trout for tagger Tim and keeping other due to hook depth. Keep your eyes open for tags to support his doctorate program and receive a really nice hat or $100 for a red tag. It was a brutal day after wind died out and green heads took over – hot and painful. Extreme Fishing at its best. Carry loads of 40% deet stuff will help!!!!!
Again – all these came on my Mud Minnows!
Shrimp should start to get larger and I am still taking orders now for eating shrimp as they start being caught. I will still discount my price even with rising cost.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
If you would like opportunity to get out and catch some of these slot drum or trout, give me a call. My rates are available on my site under charter services link. Big drum trips coming up can also be scheduled but this current upper slot action on light tackle ranks high.
The Jimmy Arthur Memorial Fishing Tournament is set for August 7 with all proceeds going to his 3 girls. It is going to be flounder, trout and drum with trophies for 3 largest in each category. I am also planning on being a NC Wildlife License Agent in August taking care of all your hunting/fishing license needs as well as boat registration and renewals. Been putting that off for 3 years but is need more locally now with Mr Alfred Cahoons retirement.
For anyone looking for a place to rent for a vacation in Pamlico County – I have the opportunity to offer a friends house that has 2 bdrm/1bath on Dawson Creek with private pier. Call me and I will hook you up with the owners.

late June update

Have had a few good days around sound!
Did an unpaid charter with daughter, grandson & friend. Hot – I mean weather. After 4 moves found some fish – 4 nice trout and 1 just under slot drum. Crystal had a blast with drum and my buddy caught 3 of the trout helping me tag 2 for Tim’s program with Reggie getting his first trout. Had to leave good bite due to summer storms. Hate it but safety first.
Michael was trying out a new boat and landed a SLAM releasing other trout.
By the way – all these came on my Mud Minnows!
Am getting additional reports of silver flash – tarpon – with no verification of hook ups. As hot as it is it cant be long with bait moving in some.
I am taking orders now for eating shrimp as they start being caught. I will still discount my price even with rising cost.
Last Call - Minn Kota rebates on motors and chargers expire on purchases after July 1, so get your order in to save up to $100 depending on model or charger. I have 2 chargers in stock.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
If you would like opportunity to get out and catch some of these slot drum or trout, give me a call. My rates are available on my site under charter services link. Big drum trips coming up can also be scheduled.
I taught the kids at Heartworks Child Care Monday how to cast their spin caster I donated with the help of Henrys – the kids with least experience won the accuracy cast test. Sent them home to practice and finish next Monday seeing who work hardest. The rest is up to their parents to get them out fishing.
A group of friends have decided to start a Memorial fishing tournament – Jimmy Arthur Memorial Fishing Tournament August 7 - with all proceeds going to his 3 girls. It is going to be flounder, trout and drum with trophies for 3 largest in each category. There is also a jr angler category with trophies for largest of each category. mid June update

The story is still the same – get out and enjoy fishing and hope for the best. Trout are scarce but a few nice fish around.
Had a trip Monday with the Chenoweth family and the Lieutenant put it on Dad. We had some upper slot drum action and a couple nice trout fishing the mouth of the river. Will post pictures of this trip as soon as I get them.
Max and his Dad Blace had a good morning before storms ran them off with 7 nice drum – Max had this 30” fish that he released.
Large croakers still being caught and with a little showing of spanish mackerel.
I am taking orders now for eating shrimp as they start being caught. I will still discount my price even with rising cost. My bait shrimp price has doubled this year but not my prices. I am raising my cup price by only .50 and hope to maintain that through the year.
Minn Kota rebates on motors and chargers expire on purchases after July 1, so get your order in to save up to $100 depending on model or charger. I have 2 chargers in stock.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing.
If you would like opportunity to get out and catch some of these slot drum or trout, give me a call. My rates are available on my site under charter services link. Big drum trips coming up can also be scheduled.
I started working with the kids at Heartworks Child Care Monday – man does patience have a tough meaning! Will teach them casting this week and fish the following.
Let me close with some sad news – I lost my buddy – Jimmy Arthur passed away last Sunday. Those of you that have been to my shop in the past when I was gone may have had the pleasure to meet him. It has been a tough week for all of his really close friends. A group of friends have decided to start a Memorial fishing tournament with all proceeds going to his 3 girls. It will probably be flounder, trout and drum with trophies for 3 largest in each category. They are also planning on having bbq plates for sale. It will be a fun annual event to help the 3 girls he so dearly loved. Keep your eyes open for details and come support our cause.
Late news update - check out these 2 kids - raised around great parents and fishing. Fathers day trip went well with a combined botherly slam. Dont get any better. Good job too Capt/Dad Bruno!!!

mid june good news report

Finally found time to get out on the water Tuesday and had a great couple of hours. Fished the mouth of Neuse using Deep Creek Lures and verified the quality. Caught several slot drum and just undersize flounder on their bait. It is very durable, scented and will not harden on hook. Come see me for a good selection of styles and colors available. I also was trying my I-Kam Video Glasses and thought I had the largest drum filmed from hook up to laying in the boat – OOPS, musta hit wrong button, didn’t save. But these glasses a really neat and quality of video/audio is really good too for under $200. I will be glad to order a pair for you at my discounted pricing.
Capt Michael had the Spangler family out Friday for a great trip around the mouth of Neuse. They had several nice trout with one 6#er, a citation for Robert Spangler, who is visiting his son Todd. They also had limit of slot drum and 1 flounder. Most of these were caught on live bait.
Saturday was ladies day with Julie and Ms Pace weighing in ALMOST citation trout.
To the kids, Ryan is at it again this summer. He, his dad and grandpa had a nice catch of slot drum and large croakers along with a nice flounder to carry back to Wendell. They also caught several small trout which is good to see. There hasn’t been many small fish showing of late.
And last but not least, this child staying at Sea Gull Villas caught his 1st trout Saturday – what a way to get started.
As you can see, fishing appears to be picking up. Shrimp are starting to show so as do the fish. Croakers have been exceptionally large this year with good numbers too. They are hitting shrimp and small mud minnows. There has also been reported sightings of tarpon. I saw what is believed to be one roll while riding ferry yesterday am. Old drum are right behind.
Let me help get your gear ready with new line. Large selection of mono or can order braid for those who wish to use it. I will be carrying Gamakatsu 9/0 J hooks and Capt Owen rigs though the season. Also have access to fresh bait; call me for ordering.
Keeping live mud minnows/finger mullet around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing.
If you would like opportunity to get out and catch some of these slot drum or trout, give me a call. My rates are available on my site under charter services link. Big drum trips coming up can also be scheduled.
I will start working with the kids at Heartworks Child Care Monday – teaching them fish identification, safety, gear, baits and technique with a trip to River Dunes to actually fish some.

Early June Update

It has been a while since reporting but I have a little to share from the County.
To start, my buddy Capt Joe Ward of FlyDaddy Charters put his client on a 7# citation trout last week. Nice exceptional catch for an out of towner.
Now to the KIDS – gets no better!!!
Rider Pressly caught his first big fish – a 17” flounder. His dad and Poppy are proud and he is HOOKED. He is being raised around the water and will now probably never leave! His Poppy used to know how to fish.
Zachary Bruno landed a real nice trout that he really thought would make citation – OOPS – cant break rules even for kids but wow what a fish – 4.5#. Being raise right on the water – he is bound to be a top notch fisherman like his dad.
Not really kids but treat them as such – Michael & Julie had a nice slot drum day.
Fishing in general is tough. The lack of bait in river for what ever reason, sure don’t help. There has been a lot of large croakers and spot caught in the area on shrimp. Speaking of shrimp – watch for rising prices. Damn oil company trying to profit and destroy our natural environment. I will do the best I can to keep my prices down for my customers. Taking orders now for eating shrimp as they start to being caught.
I am working on getting approved with Yeti Coolers. Need to meet minimum initial order. Call me for pricing for this.
Minn Kota is running rebates on RT motors and chargers. Call me for discount pricing and installation.
Power Poles are my thing too. Let me help with your toys.
Keeping live mud minnows around that are producing flounder, drum and trout.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing.
I now stocked with Deep Creek Lures rubber baits. These are a scented rubber in great colors and shapes at cheaper than my Gulp pricing. Come check it out. There is one called flounder flap that I am told is a killer on flounder.
No weigh in my tournament. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.

Mothers Day Update

Trout fishing really off this year; my guess due to winter we had. Maybe warmer water can get some gators out into sounds and rivers; just have to work harder for them. Flounder have been making a fair showing along with puppy drum and nice slots too. These 2 out of towner guys working a shutdown at PCS came by Saturday for info and bait and did well with a few slot drum fishing our local limited public shoreline. They had a blast.
Biggest news is COBIA. They are here and in numbers. My buddy, Joe Ward of FLYDADDY Charters, did a solo trip Friday and stuck this nice one. One word of advise, be considerate of other fishermen and don’t run up hard and into bait. Same as spanish; fish with get spooked and mess everyone up. I am heading out tomorrow to get my stuff right and will be ready for cobia trips afterward. Fish should hang around 4-6 weeks in good numbers. Call me if you would like to chance a fight with one of these “Poor Mans Marlin”.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing as well as 3 used Penn 260 Slammers in good working condition at approximately 50% of retail cost.
Shrimp season is starting slow but not too early to let me know if you would like to order some fresh off the boat shrimp for your freezer. Prefer orders of 25lb and up and share off boat discount pricing with you based on current pricing. Guarantee Freshness.
Remember - I am your local Deep Creek Lures rubber bait dealer. These are a scented rubber in great colors and shapes at cheaper than my Gulp pricing. Come check it out. There is one called flounder flap that I am told is a killer on flounder.
No weigh in my tournament. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.
I will be working with our Pamlico County kids this June attending Heartworks of Bayboro which provide non profit services for kids. They have asked me to provide fishing training and I intend to cover fresh and saltwater with a day or 2 actually fishing. I have asked my distributers for help with some rods and life vest but not yet commited. If you have any good gear that may work for this and can donate it to the individuals, please call me. My business is slow now and I cant finance myself.

Rainbow Trip Report

Still no good words on trout this spring. Had good reports on some nice size fish but few and far between and very few small fish as usual. Looks like we may have a slow spring with hopes for a strong fall pick up – who knows. Flounder has picked up a little and should continue into summer. This shot is of a nice almost citation by one of my newest trout fishing customers, Matt Deaton; thought it was citation but only close – 4.72. Picture not good but probably best cause he wouldn’t help the picture! Keep going Matt.
Oriental Boat Show was filled with vendors but my thought is that we lacked patrons this year. My booth was successful but no as good as last year. Plan on coming our next year, Rotary Club is doing a great job of raising money for local causes.
I went fishing in Branson Missouri this week with Capt Steve Dickie of Anglers Advantage. I fished for rainbow and hopes of a large brown trout. Let me tell you, they have a great fishery supported by the state stocking rainbows monthly. No brown stuck but wow – rainbows by the numbers and nice fish too. Missed way more than caught – a lot different than speckled trout bite. You can see difference ib rainbow species, brighter are state fish and dull are silver federal fish – does this relate to our world??? Maybe one day we can get a NC Fisheries speckled trout stocking program? A lot of fun and highly recommend http://www.Anglersadvantage.com to anyone heading out to Missouri. I will be telling you soon about a UV bait he is working on.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing and will be putting on craigs list next week.
I am now stock with Deep Creek Lures rubber baits. These are a scented rubber in great colors and shapes at cheaper than my Gulp pricing. Come check it out. There is one called flounder flap that I am told is a killer on flounder.
No weigh in my tournament. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.

Boat Show Info & Report
Slow to get any strong reports on our trout – getting good reports on occasion and next day not squat. Hearing of fish from New Bern to the sound with no area any better than other. Hope we see a change soon or we may have a slow spring recovery. This shot is of a nice catch by one of my customers not wanting publicity; thought one was citation but only close – 4.88. He wouldn’t let his cousin even catch 1 fish, just net!
I will be at the Oriental Boat Show next weekend 16-18 Apr. They have sold out of vendor space – should be a great event. Come see me.
I also have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing. This came from a friends brother in law who managed to hoard up stuff. All in great shape with sizes ranging fron 12-80 lb. Spring Has Sprung

Warmer weather is bring a very few reports of trout showing willingness to bite. Don’t expect to go and catch a limit on short notice but might pick up a few if you have patience.
Speaking of patience, Camden Newell caught his first rock with Grandpa eagerly watching. We had a Grandpa, Dad and Son trip that was a little slow but beautiful weather. Camden was ready to go in when it all happened. I asked him what he learned from this and without hesitation he said “patience”. You can see the pleasure show in the smiles – he and grandpa. He demanded he take home 1 filet and have it for supper; hope he enjoyed it.
