Early June Reort

What a change a week can make. Bait has moved into the river and already following is the Spanish mackerel. There has been a good number report’s of a lot of Spanish with some nice ones being caught too. Some use rods and other like myself pull hand lines tagged with 00 clark spoons and my rocking wooble heads too. Its a lot of fun and good eating.
Spot and croaker have also been hitting shrimp and squid around Dawson/Oriental areas. Haven’t seen sizes but one customers said they were nice and good numbers.
Flounder has been the big news with a lot of them being caught around piers, rocks and structure in the river. Baits of choice has been Gulp, Deep Creek and mud minnows. You have to pick through them to get our supper but fun to catch.
Drum, a lot or slot fish, are up and down the river shore up tight to the bank. Carolina rigging with 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook tipped with cut bait or live mud minnows working the best. I move around with my trolling motor and get on them, then setting down power pole to catch a few before moving on. Handle these fish with care to allow survival on release.
Trout? What will happen this week? There are good numbers around in the river and sound. Normal fishing technique being careful to release health has worked. Hopefully soon we can keep a few and please if this happens; only keep what you will eat, release others for another day.
Rock are still hitting hard in New Bern as a release only fishery. Early morning and late evening the best for top water bite.
I had one of my best trips Saturday with the Lewis clan from Rockingham. They made the trip enjoyable coming to have fun and catch a few fish. I was quickly told don’t hook a fish and hand them the rod! We managed to catch fish everywhere we went. This consisted of undersize flounder, trout and 6-8 slot drum. Largest was about 21” with largest trout about 3.5 lb. We fished mostly live muds but I caught a trout or two throwing Deep Creek. Really fun for all, great to have clients also crazy as me.
For all you fly fishermen. I invite you to call or come by if I can help with any Temple Fork Outfitters fly rod, reels or accessories. I only stock Spinning rods but call help get you any of these quality products you may want. I have a customer in Raleigh has been ordering a lot and really bragging on the product as I do spinning rods.
My charter bookings are picking up so call or email soon if you would like to target any of my fisheries. I Guarantee FUN.

Memorial Day Reort

Memorial Day is past now and I have a lot to talk about.
Busy week with 3 charters and also my first Bobs Machine Shop Jack Plate install. All went well as report follows.
Thursday was a 2 boat trip with my buddy Gary Dubiel and myself. We had a wedding party from the northwest – Alaska. These people are used to catching 100# halibut and huge salmon. Welcome to our world! We fished several spots in search of slot drum using cut mullet. We started out slow with one slot drum and one trout (released) at first stop. Numerous moves resulted in notta. We leap frogged up the shore line in search of some more and Gary stopped just in front of me and found a 7 fish catch in one hole that must have been the sixe of a 55 gallon drum. Group as a whole ended the morning with a limit of slots and a morning of FUN.
Friday brought a New Bern trip for top water rock action. I had 2 guys from Vermont that have fished all over the world. I showed them our world of early am top water stump field action. We had numerous blow ups getting them to hook up on 3 smaller rock. The first got the best of me. Flipped out of the net with a spook in his mouth and landed on my foot. Other treble planted in the top of my foot when it shook its head. I had to cut of other 2 hooks and shank to get back to business. Hazards of the trades! Wind got up ending our morning trip but had a good time.
It was back to the wedding party on Sunday for another drum trip. We started out good with a quick slot in the box and a lost really nice flounder at the boat. Lawrence can add more to that if he wishes!!!!! The——we had a long morning of search with minimal results. Good friendly conversation on the water with my Chilean people; and I did learn how to pronounce Chile’.
My Michael has proven rumors to be true. Spanish are in the river. Bait moved in thick this week and guess the followed. We smoked 4 nice ones yesterday. The standard clark spoons are working with #1 planers.
Also have been hearing of several slot flounder and also spot/croaker catches around Oriental. We needed this lift – moving into a good summer fishery if we can get black drum going good. I even heard of a few shrimp being cast netted too.
My capabilities’ in my shop have been broadened from trolling motor and power pole installs by adding Bobs Machine Shop Jack plates. An avid fisherman and customers brother want a jack plate but not what I could get. He said that Bobs Machine Shop was the best by far. So, as I do in my shop, I met my customers demand. Ordered and install my first jack plate with minimal problems. For those running jack plates, check theirs out on the web and let me know if I can help you.
I am also going to be an authorized repair site for Water Snake trolling motors. These are an exclusive Henrys Tackle item with increased stocking from manufacture forthcoming. They look to be as sturdy and durable as Minn Kota at a lower price.
I have a new stock of my custom cobia jigs with reports still coming in of cobia catches. Check them out on my store stuff and can ship quantity at 4.95 anywhere.
My charter bookings are picking up so call or email soon if you would like to target any of my fisheries. I Guarantee FUN.
Be Safe on the water.

Mid May Report

I know it’s been awhile since I have posted. Hopefully I have enough to give a good report of current conditions.
One of my new customers has been bringing his kids in and getting them into fishing. He sent me their first fish pics and man those two guys are proud of their catches. If dad keeps them going, they will grow up to be avid fishermen one day.
Now I have been out twice looking cobia and struck out, plenty of sharks though and beautiful Spanish. Then I get a picture sent to me from a good friend of his dad vacationing from PA on Atlantic Beach with his surf catch of a 30” fish – oops he had to release it. But he did better than myself.
Did have a nice weigh at shop with Dale Walls 35lb cobia caught Wednesday at the Cape. Said he lost other larger fish due to his light leaders. OOPS.
I have sold out of my custom cobia jigs but more coming Tuesday. Check them out on my store stuff and can ship quantity at 4.95 anywhere.
Had a great trip Friday with Mike and his son Kyle in the Neuse. My job was to put Kyle (8 years old) on his first drum. Not as easy to do this year as you expect. Well, we went to one of my favorite spots and did manage to get him 3 trout, 2 on DOA Deadly Combo and the 24 ½” fish on fresh mullet on a circle hook. When it hit, I hoped it was the drum we had wanted but wow – when I saw that fish come to the top – I new the kids first fish would be a citation (24” release). He was tickled as well as myself and his dad. Worked several other areas hard with 1 needle fish and 1 croaker. He left me to head to Camp Seafare for the weekend and brag about his catch.
Rock has still been producing in New Bern. Some nice fish coming back from spawn. May hold up a few weeks weather dependent.
I have increased my DOA selection lately, come check out the baits of choice. Pick up a TFO rod to fish these with too. Put it in your hand and you wont believe how light and great action they have.
My charter bookings are picking up so call or email soon if you would like to target any of my fisheries. I Guarantee FUN.
Be Safe on the water – there will be a lot of folks out this coming weekend with a lot not know all the rules and respect.

Easter Ladies Fish

Just a quick report of local paradise ladies Easter catches.
Ashley caught a keeper inland trout but released it to be able to spawn and maybe caught again. Her and Joey had a couple flounder too.
Christina had a dockside caught legal flounder. Nice catch. Guess what it was caught on? Can you believe chicken gizzard? Oh yes, my weekend guy use strange bait but catch fish.
Now, when you come in my shop and I tell you all these baits catch, believe me!!!
Hope to head out next week to do a Cobia check and will report my findings. I have plenty of openings – let me know when you may want to go.
Check out my online stuff on my website.
Hope all had a great Easter weekend!

Easter Report

Will it ever quit blowing?
Trip out this morning with Jerry and his son TJ. They had caught rainbows and browns but never Speckled’s. Did manage to get their first speckled trout which I told them was small compared to our normal trout. Maybe one day we will be able to get them on those.
My side-kick JBs friends, Joel and Charlie, came out of a blowing day last weekend in Pamlico River with 2 nice rock and a flounder. I would have never predicted anyone would have fished that day. Here’s to Lenoir County guys.
Remember- rock closes the 30th of April.
I have had a report of cobia sightings in the area but no takers. It won’t be long before we can stick one of these brownies.
Check out my jigs and stuff on my site.
I have opens for inshore and cobia trips for those wanting to get out and have some fun. Trout are mixed with nice drum and occasional rock or flounder.
Be safe on the water and let’s all pay reverence to this great weekend!

Beautiful Morning

Beautiful morning not seen lately and luckily had some good folks wanting me to take them fishing. Its been tough with current regs’.
Started out as a day od rock fish but had a very slow bite. Did manage one rock on a Rapala Xrap Sub surface bait and a nice bass on a Rapala Skitter Walk. Decided to head back to inland creeks to see if we could get on some of the trout I had been tagging.
Caught 2 right at about 14” and an 18 ½” Drum to allow my clients to at least have a small meal of fresh fish. Thank the Lord for NCWRC allowing my clients to eat a little good in our waters. These fish are steadily moving out of the creeks and into our river. Hopefully some can make it to spawn.
That’s all for now – have a couple of days on water next week and will give an Easter report afterward.
Let me know if I can help you with any boating or fishing needs or charters. I sell and install trolling motors, power poles or talons.
Check out my site for the web store stuff that ships cheap. Cobia season short coming – check out my jigs.

Another Blowing Monday
It was another windy Monday on the water. Will it ever end?
Went out to tag some more trout for Tim’s studies and see what was still holding in the creeks. Fighting the wind, I did manage to boat six trout. Tagged 3, 2 too short and one in the broiler for my wife and I. Cant imagine how many I could have caught if not for the windy. Hard to feel bite with 20 yard loops in your line.
I cant figure why not many anglers are out fishing this spring. Has been a good bite of trout, drum and an occasional flounder. And let’s not forget the rock. They are still legal tender through April 30. Hopefully we will get a fair ruling from NCMFC to open some degree of limit on trout – hopefully sooner than June.
In the mean time, I am sitting around a quite shop or fishing.
Let me know if I can help you with any boating or fishing needs or charters. I sell and install trolling motors, power poles or talons.

April Fundraiser Drum Tournament
There is a fund raising Drum Tournament scheduled for 30 April out of New River Marina in Sneads Ferry. Brochure is attached. The proceeds will go to help the Powell family through these trying times. Eric has Lou Gehrig’s Disease and will need all the support we can give him and his family. Come out and have a fun time fishing and supporting this cause. We should all help the needy as much as possible. If you cant fish, I am sure they will accept any contribution you can make.

April Blow Day

Windy day out to attempt to tag a few trout before the BLOW! Didn’t work – could fish me normal spots without 100 loop in line. Did manage to snag an 18” flounder on one of the few lee shores I could fish. And I want all to know that she hit one of my Lil Corkie baits. Now these have been for sale in my shop for 2 years with little interest. Couldn’t talk guys into using them. Well, I found a guide in Louisiana who uses them religiously and sold him all I had last week. So I decided to fish one today and damn a nice flounder. Still have them in Blood Hound Jr and Broken Back and will make someone a deal to move them out for more room.
Ole Bobby Huck has been chasin’ inland trout and landed a nice tournament fish that someone would love to have caught. He hit this 5# bass throwing trout baits.
Trout are still in creeks but will be heading out as water warms. And June 15 cant come fast enough.
Rock are still in good supply in the Neuse but remember 30 April is last keeper day. Fish bridges, trestles and ledges if the wind will let you
Call me if you would like to have me take you out for these fish as well as cobia this next month. Hoping for another great season on them.
Be safe on the water.

Still Rockin’

Another afternoon in New Bern with Daughter and her BOO. Started out nice but wind kicked up as usual.
Managed to snag 6 rock with 2 in 5-8 lb range working stump fields and bridges. These fish are awesome on m/l gear. Their strike on my Rockin’ Wobbles will shock you.
These fish should be available through the open season which ends April 30. I have gotten word from a friend of mine that does commercial work and he is seeing a lot of large rock yet to move up past New Bern to spawn. This means more good fish coming.
Trout and drum are showing well in creeks with some nice upper slot drum and 2-3 lb trout. Remember you can’t keep trout in coastal or joint waters though.
It’s only about a month away from first showing of Cobia. Get your gear ready for hopefully another awesome season. I have some custom made jigs in 3 or 4 oz for pitching into bait pods and around buoys. These were hard to get last year so I started early. See photos of them on my store site.
I have a full range of line in mono and braid to fill your reels with fresh stuff for the season.
If you would like to target these fish, call me and schedule a fun filled trip for all the above mentioned fish.

Do I have a report?
Have had 2 good days this week – Rockin’ and Troutin’
Michael and myself hit the Neuse and had a far day with out of slot sluff. Fat fish but non to keep but 1. A lot of fun on light tackle; much better than large rock on heavy gear. These fish should be moving around some heading up river to spawn.
I had Michaels squeeze, my daughter Crystal out today, and fish inland waters for first time this year and found a good number of 12- 14” fish. We tagged 20 in this range with 3 getting red $100 tags. Freeze hurt us but we still have a stock of fish that hopefully will spawn us back to where we have been. Did also get a nice 17” flounder on my Mirrolure. Will be good with crab meat.
With my reports, I want to get everyone that has been skeptical about our winter outcome, there are some trout around. My thought is we lost some but maybe not as much as expected. Lets all be as conservative as we can to bring back stock as we have had.
I am open for booking a charter for these legal inland waters fish. We can have a good time and also have a good meal if you wish. Inland rules allow keeping trout now,
If you prefer rock, we can do that too.
I have shop open now regular hours BUT, lack of business has me out fishing and sharing what’s actually happening. If I am out fishing, I have a back up plan. First Mate Buddy can meet you at shop to assist.
Be Safe and Conservative

Great Day with a Great Buddy

I had a great trip and mental mind wash today with my fishin’ buddy – Gary Dudiel. Damn what a day!
We started with rock in several spots in Neuse jigging the bottom. Lots of fish with most in non slot range (22-27). Why does anyone want to fish out of town with what we have here?
Next, we went after crappie. What fun. We caught several nice size and tasty(tonight) fish jigging around the trees.
To finish of a great day we ended up targeting shad. No sunshine did not make it the best but did manage one row fat white right at the start. Cant wait for my eggs in the AM. Had several more on but lost and a lot of lost jigs!
You can’t ask for a better day with winds howling but in some protected waters and couldn’t have done this out in open waters today.
If you are wanting a trip to target these exciting fish, let me know. They should be around next couple of weeks. If I can’t get you out I know a great guy that can!

cancun report
Just back from Cancun – whoo, got to get back to reality!!!! Had a great trip with what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico; except my fishing trip! My wife and I charters Capt Marciano of Cancun Tarpon Fishing Adventure (http://www.cancuntarponfishing.com) and had a great time. We were accompanied by Apprentice Guide Jose who was a blast too. Fishing from a Hewes Flats boat we chased large permit sight casting with no takers – my fault or they just weren’t hungry. Then on to blind casting for snapper, catching moon and mangrove on their baits and tackle as well as my TFO rod matched with a Daiwa Exceler 2000 reel casting DOA jig with 3” CAL bait spooled with Fins Braid. What a blast. Lost what I think was a barracuda (Jose’). Then on to late day Tarpon, fishing live sardines live lined in mangrove canals. You could see them working. First hook-up was on my tackle but short lived. Capt said there’s for you quality line!!!!! They use mono. I am not sure if line gave way or hook knot issue???? Jose’! All in fun. Went to their gear for lack of daylight time and hooked up again getting this one to jump numerous times and boated. Upon release, dock bound to get away from mosquitoes like we have. A great time and highly recommend them if you get that way. They have all tackle so no need to care your own. I just like to try my favorites in other areas.
Took my daughter and Michael rocking before going south and we did finally dodge the wind and find some bait and fish. This was only legal of a few caught/lost. Am hearing rock are still hungry with some nice top water catches as well.
They also made a trip to the Cape last week and got into a load of slot drum. Mud minnows did the job.
Hope to get out this week and maybe try the shad too – will report if I do.
Back to regular hours this week – Wed/Sun 8-6. Still recommend on calling in case I get a trip booked and can’t be here. Come see my new inventory. Also call to check on fishing reports and charter bookings, hoping for a good drum bite this spring along with some trout and hopeful strong cobia year again.
Stay safe – water is still COLD for swimming
